Poisson Gros Sel or Coarse Salt Fish is a very popular dish in Haiti. I always thought Gros Sel meant the fish was more salty than usual but no.

In Haitian Creole, gro can mean big, it can also mean a lot.

What is Gros Sel?

Gros sel is coarse salt, the big bulky salt that is sold in Haitians flea markets all over Haiti, the salt you see your Haitian mother wash before she put it in the food.

The powdered salt sold in the supermarket is called table salt.
