Haitian-Dominican Activist Sonia Pierre Is Dead

Haitian-Dominican human rights advocate Solange Pierre, aka Sonia Pierre, died of a heart attack on Sunday Dec 4. She was 48.

For many years, Sonia Pierre, a Dominican woman born of Haitian parents in a Batey, has been fighting for Haitian rights in the Dominican Republic. Sonia and more than 650,000 others Haitian-Dominicans like her have been denied basic human rights just because they are of Haitian decent.

It is called "Antihaitianismo"... It is a Moral Holocaust... It is a racist bias against Haitians and descendants of Haitians by Dominicans and it is legal...

Sometimes I wonder how many embargos would be imposed on Haiti had we practiced "Antidominicanismo..."

At the age of thirteen, Sonia Pierre was arrested and threatened to be deported because she stood up and led a march against human rights violations of Dominicans of Haitian decent.

Since the age of thirteen, Sonia Pierre has been leading this fight, to help our Haitian brothers and sisters in the Dominican Republic walk tall and benefit from basic human rights.

In 2003 Sonya received an award from Amnesty International for her efforts. In 2007 Sonya received the Robert F. Kennedy human rights award in Washington DC. During that trip, she discovered she had some heart problems but that didn't stop her.

In 2010, Sonya also received the International Women of Courage Awards at the U.S. Department of State.

Unfortunately, this past Sunday, her torched was extinguished age of 48.

In life, some people see pain and suffering and they do nothing about it. That was not the case for Sonia Pierre. She is a rare example of a strong Haitian woman, someone who dedicated her life for what she things is right.

I certainly hope, like Dr. Martin Luther King, her fight pays off for all the Dominicans out there of Haitian decent whom she dedicated her life to helping.

May she rest in peace... Que descanse en paz... Que la terre lui soit legere...

It is with heavy heart that I am saying to Solange/Sonia Pierre to Rest In Peace.

Let us hope that her work was not in vain. The Dominicans from Haitian descent will see the light at the end of the tunnel.

All will be because of you
