Haitian-American Karine Jean-Pierre makes history as first black US White House Press Secretary
Karine Jean-Pierre, first black woman US White House Press Secretary
Both of Karine Jean-Pierre's parents Haitian. They gave birth to her in Martinique and raised her in New York City. Her mother worked as a home health aide, and her father was a cab driver.
Karine Jean-Pierre has been White House Principal Deputy Press Secretary since 2021. She served as the chief of staff for Democratic vice presidential nominee Kamala Harris during the 2020 presidential campaign, becoming the first black woman to hold that position.
Karine Jean-Pierre is set to become the 35th White House Press Secretary on May 13, 2022, following the expected departure of Jen Psaki, making her the first black person to be Press Secretary.
It is also important to note that Karine is openly gay. That makes her the first openly gay person to hold that position as well.
