REAL ID Deadline Approaches: What Haitian Immigrants in the U.S. Need to Know

Starting May 7, 2025, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) will begin strictly enforcing the REAL ID requirement for anyone flying within the United States. For many of us in the Haitian community, especially those of us living here with Temporary Protected Status (TPS) or under the parole program, this could be one more layer of stress in a time when immigration issues are already weighing heavily on our minds.

This change means that any adult flying domestically in the United States will need a REAL ID-compliant driver's license or identification card, or else you won't be allowed to board your flight.

Back in 2017 Haitians went to Chile at an alarming rate. By the end of that year, the number of Haitians who entered Chilean territory was well over 100,000 within two years. by the year 2019, the number had grown to close to 200,000 Haitians in Chile.

Here are the numbers:

43,898 Haitians migrated to Chile in 2016, authorities said. Seven months into 2017, the number of Haitians who had migrated to Chile that year was already at 44,289.

Dominican immigration repatriates more than 7,000 Haitians in the single month

The Dominican Republic has been repatriating more and more Haitians lately. Last month alone, between September 1st and October 2nd 2021, Dominican authorities sent back home over 7,000 Haitians.

Because of all the problems going on in Haiti these days, social political instability, gang violence, and other economic downturns that not seem to be improving, many Haitians are trying any which way leave the country and seek a better life elsewhere.

President Joe Biden tweet telling immigrants not to come to the United States

You thought President Trump was blunt, President couldn't be more blunt in his message to Immigrants: Don't come over, he said.

"I can say quite clearly, don't come over." President Joe Biden said to immigrants looking to come to the United States in a tweet on March 23, 2021.

The US Embassy in Port-au-Prince Haiti even put it Haitian Creole on their web site to make sure Haitians got the message loud and clear.

The Embassy's tweeted the message message in Creole: "Mwen ka di sa byen kle: pa vini." with a picture of Joe Biden on it.

Did The United States deport a Haitian man exposed to COVID-19?

There is a rumor that US immigration officials deported a Haitian man exposed to the coronavirus COVID-19. Read this from the Miami Herald.

A Haitian national who had been exposed to COVID-19 respiratory disease while in federal immigration custody was not among a group of detainees deported back to Haiti by the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement Tuesday.

The detainee, whom the Miami Herald agreed not to name, was part of a mobilization late Monday night from members of Congress and immigration advocates to stop the flight from departing from Alexandria, Louisiana. However, ICE still sent the plane to Haiti with 61 detainees on board.
