Dessalines was a despot in the mold of François and Jean-Claude Duvalier.

To this day, Haiti is paying a price for Dessalines' detrimental policies.

1. Declared himself Emperor.

2. Did not trust white French people.

3. Had the white Haitian minority killed by ordering the 1804 Haiti Massacre.

(You need white's expertise to keep a country afloat; just look at South Africa)

4. Declared Haiti an all-black nation and forbade whites from owning property or land there.

(That didn't work so well for Zimbabwe, which went from being the breadbasket of Africa to having food riots and famine).

5. Enforced a harsh regimen of plantation labor.

(Haitians went from being exploited by Whites to being exploited by a black tyrant).
