University of Michigan researchers, in partnership with the Community Organization for Haitian Agriculture, have found that rice exported to Haiti, primarily from the US, contains alarming levels of arsenic and cadmium.

These heavy metals can significantly increase the risk of various cancers, heart disease, diabetes, and other serious health issues.

The study found that the levels of arsenic and cadmium in imported rice were significantly higher than in rice grown in Haiti, with some imported samples containing twice the average amount of these toxic substances and exceeding international safety limits.

The study, the first to compare the heavy metal content in locally grown rice versus imported rice, highlights the urgent need for stricter regulations and safety measures to protect Haitian consumers.
