Haiti's Brain Drain: Nearly 200,000 Haitians migrated to Chile from 2016 to 2019

Back in 2017 Haitians went to Chile at an alarming rate. By the end of that year, the number of Haitians who entered Chilean territory was well over 100,000 within two years. by the year 2019, the number had grown to close to 200,000 Haitians in Chile.

Here are the numbers:

43,898 Haitians migrated to Chile in 2016, authorities said. Seven months into 2017, the number of Haitians who had migrated to Chile that year was already at 44,289.

Chile became the new destination for Haitians seeking opportunities, but for how long?

Chilean immigration officials were worried. They wanted to better control the flow of people entering the country claiming to be tourists but who, in reality, wanted to stay and work in Chile.

Following the election of Sebastián Piñera, who ran on a platform of stemming illegal immigration, the visa-free entry for Haitians was cancelled. By the time Sebastián Piñera came to power in 2017, there were over 105,000 Haitians in Chile. By the end of 2019, this number had grown considerably to 185,865, according to the National Statistics Institute.

Yes - few jobs exist in Haiti, but when a country imports 80% of it's food, there's a problem.

When Haiti and those who love her, start investing in Haitian farmers, young Haitians will have a brighter future.

It's a travesty that Haiti was the world's 3rd largest producer of coffee in 1949 and 2 years ago Haiti allowed coffee imported from Vietnam.
