Miami Dade FL Celebrates Haitian Indepedence Month

Opening Ceremony to feature dance performances, poetry readings, cultural exhibits and international authors and celebrities.

Miami-Dade County Mayor Carlos Alvarez, in collaboration with Ayiti History and Resources, is inviting the public to the Fifth Annual Haitian Independence Month Celebration opening ceremony on Friday, January 8, 2010 at 10:30 a.m., in the lobby of the Stephen P. Clark Center, 111 NW First Street.

As part of the ceremony, dances will be performed by Leisserfaire Dance Company, Ife-Ile Dance Company and Poetry presentation by "Mecca Marcelin aka Grimo".

Numerous exhibitors will be on hand showcasing Haitian culture arts and crafts. The main exhibit will be on display throughout the month of January featuring a photographic montage highlighting the History of Haiti with the theme "Honoring our Future by Preserving our Past."

A resolution designating the month of January as Haitian Independence Month in Miami-Dade County will be officially presented. Participants will also have the opportunity to meet our honored guest his Excellency Haiti Ambassador to the United States Raymond Alcide Joseph, Haitian International Super Model and Actor Jimmy Jean Louis from the NBC TV series Heroes. Additionally, Historian Herve "Fanini" Lemoine will be hosting a book signing for his new book "Face A Face".

The Haitian Independence Month celebration is one of the Mayor's Initiatives designed to promote interaction within our multi-cultural society, and to create understanding and appreciation amongst the different traditions in Miami-Dade County.
