Haiti-born writer Edwidge Danticat has won the prestigious MacArthur Foundation fellowship, nicknamed the Genius Award.
She has just won the biggest honor of her career, according to an article by Jacqueline Charles of the Miami Herald, an honor that also comes with some DOLA!

"I wrote about a Haitian American experience in the United States... I was inspired very much by storytelling... growing up in Haiti I was told lots of stories and... wanted in my own way to become a storyteller"

You want to hear something funny? I was told lots of stories too... and I have been telling lots of stories... BUT... I never knew that you can win an award that comes with half a million dollars by telling great stories. I have been writing on the Internet for almost ten years and I bought a book called Get That Novel Started" by Donna Levin almost ten years ago and... I never got that not all started! Edwidge Danticat, my dear sister, You inspire me, you really do. I mean you've inspired me before but now you just gave me 500,000 new inspirations and reasons to get something started. Edwidge Danticat made her debut as a novelist in 1994 with Breath, Eyes, Memory. and since then, she has written eight books. She recently finished a collection of essays she is currenly working on a new novel. It is always wonderful to hear these great stories about Haitian men and women who are achieving great success outside of Haiti. And I am always proud to find these stories and to share them with you. If you are as inspired reading this as I am writing it then I will feel that I did something right Congratulations Edwidge Danticat When you achieve such great level of success I believe that all of us Haitians are proud of you, our country, and ourselves.
