Trouble in Cap-Haitien, Tropicana spokesperson dies in a political meeting hosted by Senators Youri Latortue and Jacques Sauveur Jean

The meeting was a "conference / debate" where Haitian senators Youri Latortue and Jacques Sauveur Jean were answering questions about Petro Caribe.

"This is an unfortunate incident," Prévil G. Castro, North Haiti Police director (DDN/PHN), said. "Yes, gas was dropped inside. We do not know in what circumstance and what gas it was. We have an ongoing investigation. We can not yet communicate a definitive result. Investigators work on it."

According to Haitian police officers who were on the scene, everyone who attended the event was checked except for the VIPs who were going to make the presentation and those in charge of their safety, DDN/PHN Castro said.

Senator Youri Latortue told Le Nouvelliste a tear gas of type C3, "extremely toxic" was thrown on the right of the stage, just as he was about to answer questions. then another was launched in the audience as well as a third which did not explode.

The senator went on to say that "the door where I had to go out, opened at first, was subsequently closed from the outside." His driver had to break the lock with a stone, he said.

Jacques Dubois, a local radio host and spokesperson for Tropicana music band, died in the incident and dozens of people including police officers were injured from inhalation of the gas.
