On November 18, 1803, at the Battle of Vertières, the Indigenous Army of Santo Domingo, which became the 1st Army of Haiti on January 1, 1804, won the final victory over the occupying army. The Commander-in-Chief of our Army, General Jean-Jacques Dessalines, proclaimed Haiti Independent and, with the help of his immediate subordinates, organized the new State. (from Le Nouvelliste)
To Haitians, the army is is a sign or freedom an liberty it was there from the beginning and it must remain there. It is a matter of Haitian pride.
