What is the population of Haiti and how many police are there per 100,000 citizens?
Let's do the math.
As of July 2023, the Worldometer elaboration of the latest United Nations data estimates the current population of Haiti to be around 11.8 million people.
Divide that 9,000 Haitian police officers. That means thhere are roughly 76 police officers for every 100,000 Haitians living in Haiti.
How many active duty police officers are there in Haiti per 100,000 Haitian citizens?
If the UN is right and there are only 3,500 police officers on active duty at any given time in Haiti, that means there are only about 30 police officers patrolling the streets of Haiti for every 100,000 citizens.
It may be even less than that when you consider that many of the Haitian police on active duty are protecting government officials or performing other duties such as Customs and Border Patrol which does not specifically involve keeping the Haitian citizens safe from the bad guys.
If you think about it, Haitians are pretty much policing themselves. If you doubt that, go to the local flea market in one of our major cities on a busy day (jou mache). Tens of thousands of Haitians bartering with each other and no police presence.
