Labor Day 2006 - Weekend A L'Haitienne

Labor Day weekend 2006 is one the best weekend I’ve had in a very long time. To top it off, I spent all of my entertainment dollars right here in the Haitian community in Miami.

The Haitian community is very alive; there are many activities happening in that community. The good news it some of them don’t even cost a penny to attend.

There are some of us who have no clue what’s taking place within our Haitian community. We sit there and broadcast to each other that the Haitian community is dead.

That’s not true at all, brothers and sisters. We just don’t know what is happening that’s all.

I blame it mainly on the event planners and promoters who fail to promote their events in all the right places.

Attention Haitian Promoters - AM radio is not the right place to reach young Haitian Americans who have the latest Motorola Razor, an Mp3 player, and is more likely to IM or email you than to call you.

No… My promoter friend… you have to post all your events on the internet.

You can post all your events for FREE on popular Haitian events web sites like www.Belfet.com, www.Sakapfet.com, or www.EverythingHaitian.com.

Why?

This is where I go when I want to know what is happening.

OK… let me tone it down a little bit because I am about to tell you how wonderful my Labor Day weekend was.

Brace yourself, I am about to brag… ou konnen-m djolè!

Friday afternoon, Roland and I, we decided to meet in a Haitian restaurant to have some Griot while discussing business instead of the usual starbucks coffee.

When we discuss business, Roland and I, we have to be online. Between him and me we own over 200 websites.

Roland owns Tips Network Inc. â€" www.TipsNetwork.net â€" and I own Fouye Networks Inc. â€" www.Fouye.net

We decided to visit Le P’tit Resto a beautiful Haitian restaurant in North Miami because, not only do they serve good food in an atmosphere that invites you to sit down and eat, they also have a wireless internet access… just bring your laptop, turn it on and… Voila! You’re online!

Yes, there is a Haitian restaurant in Miami that offers internet access to their clients.

While sitting at the restaurant, we realize that Friday night is Poetry night at Le P’tit Resto.

If you’ve never heard a Haitian poet reciting a poem in Haitian Creole, if you’ve never heard a Haitian love poem in Haitian Creole, than this article is not long enough to explain to you what it feels like.

It sends shivers through your spine

I had such a great time on poetry night at Le P’tit Resto, I want to go again this coming Friday.

On Saturday, I went to another Haitian restaurant in Miami to meet with my cousin and her husband from Orlando and another cousin I bet for the first time. There again I ate some Creole cuisine and we sat in the restaurant for a couple of hours reminiscing and we had a wonderful time.

By the time we got up to leave, one of the employees mentioned that we were the highlight of the evening. Perhaps it was because we were four of six people in the restaurant who decided to sit down and be served out of the 30 or more people who came in, grabbed their food, and left.

Why are we in such a rush to go home and watch TV? Why is it that we can sit down in an Italian restaurant or a Chinese buffet and eat but we cannot do it in a Haitian restaurant?

Perhaps if more of us spend half an hour in a Haitian restaurant to eat then the restaurant owner may feel a need to redecorate and upgrade their level of service.

We need to start creating spots in the community where we can meet and network. There are many professionals in our community but we all grab our food and leave, or we gather under the loud drums of Djakout Mizik where we are unable to chit chat!

Talk about loud music… After we left the restaurant with a full stomach, we needed a place to burn some calories.

Where do you go burn calories on a Saturday night?

We decided to go to Caribbean night at Solos on the bay in Bal Harbour, FL.

Sweet Jesus! I’ve never seen such a mellow crown of young and beautiful Haitians under one roof in my life!

To close my 3 day weekend, I decided to attend the Second Haitian Annual Comedy Bash at the North Miami Performing Arts Theater.

It was the first time I witnessed Elisabeth Guerin, Philippe Rene, Prince Comic, and Kako on stage.

My friend, we have talent in the community. They will make you laugh!

I laughed so hard that night that I lost my voice before I even left the theater.

These great talents need your dollars in order to grow. So before you go out and spend your hard earned money elsewhere I urge you to reconsider.

Let us try to recycle that money back into our own community. Believe me it’s much less expensive and it is worth it.

I think I broke the record today; this is indeed my longest article. I hope you took the time to read it.

M’ale!
