Is it smart to save money in Haitian Currency these days? Read what the Dominican businessman said

True story... I walk in to a currency exchange business in the Dominican Republic to exchange some Haitian gourdes for Dominican pesos and I asked the man: "How much can I get for this good looking Haitian money?" The man laughed and made the most unusual comment.

1 Gourde - Haitian Paper Money

"I don't think it is wise for your people to continue saving money in your Haitian currency," he said. "You could save one million gourdes today only to realize it is only worth half a million tomorrow."

The man is right. I loaned 69,000 gourdes ($1,500 US at the time) to a friend back when the Haitian gourdes was only 46 gourdes to 1 US dollar.

He still owes me the money since he has not repaid me yet.

If he decides to repay me that 69,000 gourdes today when the Haitian currency is now 91 gourdes to 1 US dollar, I will only be getting back $758 US
