Energy Sources in Haiti

Here is one of the main causes of deforestation in Haiti: Look at this picture of a horse loaded with charcoal from the countryside going to market.

By the end of the day, these 3 bags of charcoal will make it to a Haitian kitchen. by the end of the week it's gone... Burned to ashes.

Charcoal is Haiti's chief source of fuel and the #1 cause for deforestation and environmental disasters.

As long as Haitians continue to use charcoal for cooking deforestation will continue.

Wikipedia says "Prior to the industrial revolution charcoal was occasionally used as a cooking fuel." I guess the industrial revolution has not yet arrived in Haiti because charcoal is still the main cooking fuel in the country.

Look at this photo... In Haiti this is called "Sanble Dife," the process of starting a charcoal wood fire.

The metal piece holding the charcoal is called a "Recho".

Renewable energy is energy that comes from resources which are continually replenished such as sunlight (Haiti has plenty of that), wind, rain, tides, waves and geothermal heat.

Providing efficient clean energy sources in Haiti would greatly reduce energy costs and dependency on fossil fuels. This is the key to improving Haiti's energy structure.

Presently, Haiti has high-energy costs, low electrification rates, and high dependency on fossil fuels
