The unveiling of the statue took place Wednesday, 22 May 2015. The bronze sculpture, measuring 2.8 meters tall is the creation of sculptor Ousmane Sow

According to VirtualTourist.com, La Rochelle was the second most important slave-trading port in France (behind Nantes). The three-cornered trade sent cheap goods, etc to West Africa where they were exchanged for slaves.

Toussaint Louverture, a descendant of black slaves, was the leader of the Haitian Revolution (1791-1802) and became one of the great figures of anti-colonialism and abolitionism.

Jah love. This is great news! I have to go see it before I leave France.

Still, I wish that the sculptor was a person from Ayiti.

Our artists are underused and under-represented.
