Over the past 25 years, local Haitian rice production has declined by 32 percent, the annual importation average of rice has grown 28 percent, and the national consumption or rice has increased on an average rate of 5% per year.
80% of all the rice consumed in Haiti comes from the United States. Did you know that?
The Haitian rice market is shared between these importers:
- Du riz Mega
- Du riz Tchako
- Du riz Jumbo
- Du riz Bongou
- Du riz Miami
- Du riz Bull

Also note: There used to be a 50 percent import tariff imposed on rice back in the late 1980s. By 1995 that tariff was reduced to only 3 percent sending the importation of rice to Haiti through the roof.
Despite all this, rice production is the breadwinner of tens of thousands of planters, farm-workers and resellers and more in the Artibonite region of Haiti.
