Haitians In Tent Cities Are Now Being Evicted!
It has been six months since the earthquake and the Haitian government still has not been able to come up with a plan for sheltering the all the Haitian citizens made homeless by the Haiti earthquake.
What I usually hear in times like this is:
"OHHHH... Nou Tout Se Ayisyen... Mezanmi... Poukisa Gran Neg Ap Fe Malere Pase Mize Konsa?"
But the question is:
Personal property is personal property... Are these landowners LEGALLY entitled to protect what's rightfully theirs?
OR... Should we focus on the MORAL question... Is it fair?
In Haiti, once you loose your land, your tend to loose it forever.
The case of Maissade Haiti...
I've been told by a family member that the land that makes up the Haitian city of Maissade once belonged to members of my family.
She said that there are documents still in existence that can prove it... But... Hmmm... I thinks it might be too late to evict the illegal tenants... LOL...
Most of the tent cities in Haiti are built on private property...
There are more than 1,200 tent cities / refugee camps scattered in Port-au-Prince and surrounding areas affected by the earthquake but here is the big surprise...
ONLY 206 of them are officially recognized...
Does that surprise you?
This information is from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA).
The landowners want their property back!
More than 1,000 little tent cities in Haiti are on private property. These landowners want to rid their land off these illegal residents in order to "build news homes or sell their land on Haiti's booming real-estate market" according an article recently posted on The Christian Science Monitor.
If you don't think this serious enough, the article also mentioned a case in Delmas 60 where a landowner showed up with "with 10 armed men in police uniforms to coerce the 178 homeless people here to leave."
Can you begin to imagine what's the worse that can happen?
Will the Haitian government wait until it happens?
What do you think?
