Howdy Alex:
Definately right, this is not a personal battle, but you're providing statements without any sources.
It's like having a wikipedia article without sources: unresourceful.
I never intended to illustrate either one or the other was right, but the fact remains that we cannot say things without consulting with sources.
As an academic, I'm sure you agree with me.
I, too, have lived in Nicaragua and I question your overall label of the country in terms of your observations of just one community on the Atlantic Coast.
Labeling a community as ignorant is one thing, but that's why you and I go in to destroy that ignorance.
But from my observation and travels, it usually is the opposite.
Particularly in the urban areas, consciousness travels around among the youth.
But then again, there is a segment of the population that is very "macho." Perhaps this is the population by which you ran into. Terrible, really.
They've been going at it destroying this ignorance among the communities.
It's been well, but I'm not sure we can classify an entire group based on an isolated observation in one area.
But I'm sure you and I can conclude together that:
A. The governments need to have the interests of the people.
B. Poverty is nothing to be proud of.
Actually, Nicaraguans consider Haitians their brothers.
Both groups have experienced harsh dictatorships, devastating earthquakes and struggle to make the best for their families.
It's admirable, really.
Don't take it personal, I just prefer statements with sources.
