President of the Dominican Republic, Leonel Fernandez announced on March 17 the construction of a university campus in Haiti with capacity for 10,000 students.
Fernandez said six buildings would be built to replace university facilities that were destroyed during the 12 January earthquake in Port-au-Prince.
President Fernandez said that university would follow the model of a UASD campus.
The Fernandez administration has built several campuses of the state university in large Dominican cities outside of Santo Domingo, the capital.
Economy Minister Temistocles Montas estimated the campus would cost US$40 million.
Details were not provided on the source of funds for the construction and operation of the university.
