I suppose so if we consider Jean Francois and George Biassou had both achieved very high status in the then Spanish Army. The comparison to Barack Obama could have also been made to Toussaint Louverture and Michael Jean, Frederick Douglass and Booker T Washington, etc...; individuals who have broken ranks from simply being free blacks to achieve a status of prominence through politics.

Their success is testimony to the existence of the possibility to be something more than mere simple simons and to rise above the mundane.
