Tennis: Naomi Osaka withdraws from Wuhan Open due to illness

Haitian-Japanese US Open champion Naomi Osaka announces her decision to withdraw from the Wuhan Open in China on Sunday because of a viral illness.

Wuhan Open organizers posted the following message on their Twitter page:

Unfortunately @Naomi_Osaka_ has been forced to withdraw from Wuhan with viral illness. Get well soon Naomi!

Haitian-Japanese tennis player Naomi Osaka is one match away from winning her second championship within two weeks. Osaka beat Camila Giorgi at the semifinals of the 2018 Pan Pacific Open. She is going to another final.

Osaka will face Karolina Pliskova, a former world No. 1 and currently ranked No. 9 in the world by the Women's Tennis Association, at the Pan Pacific Open Finals.

"My serve got me out of a lot of trouble today," said Osaka according to ESPN. "She was playing really well, and my serve helped me. I was a bit nervous because I really wanted to reach the final."

The 20-year-old Haitian-Japanese tennis player is the newest Brand Ambassador for the Nissan Motor Corporation.

Naomi Osaka said growing up her Haitian father used to drive a Nissan, "so being able to be a brand ambassador now, it feels like I've come full circle," Reuters reported.
