Caracol is likely to be the original village (hometown) of Guacanagaric, one of five Caciques (native chiefs) of Hispaniola.
Guacanagaric who was friendly to Columbus, told him there was gold in the Island (big mistake) and allowed him to establish the settlement of La Navidad near his village.
Columbus' Flagship Santa Maria in Danger of Looting Off Haiti Coast
"There is nobody watching the ship right now... somebody knows where we are," says underwater explorer Barry Clifford who fears that Christopher Columbus' 500-year-old flagship, La Santa Maria, found off the coast ot Haiti may be in danger of looting unless it is salgaved immediately...
Clifford told The Explorers Club wednesday:
"I think this is an emergency situation. I think the ship needs to be excavated as quickly as possible, conserved and displayed to the world... I'm ready to leave next week if I get the green light..."

An underwater explorer claims the sunken shipwreck he found off Haiti is in fact the long lost remains of the Santa Maria, Christopher Columbus' flagship from his first voyage to the Americas... This could be the biggest find in shipwreck history...
The underwater explorer Barry Clifford CNN late Monday that he found the ship in the exact area where Columbus says the Santa Maria ran aground more than 500 years ago. The wreck is stuck on a reef off Haiti's northern coast, 10 to 15 feet beneath the water's surface.
