Dominican Republic listed among countries with the highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the world

According a report from to the Pan American Health Organization (PAHO), Latin America and the Caribbean have the second highest rate of teenage pregnancy in the world. The Dominican Republic is on that list. 15% of annual pregnancies occur in children under 20, the report said.

While the global rate of teenage pregnancies is estimated at 46 births per 1,000 mothers between 15 and 19 years of age, in Latin America and the Caribbean it is 66.5 per 1,000, second only to sub-Saharan Africa.

In the Caribbean, this occurs with greater incidence in the Dominican Republic and Guyana, the report said.

Adolescents under 15 years of age are also getting pregnant and having babies in these countries and the trend is going up according to the report.
