TPS for Haitians Update -- ROME - One of the Vatican's top diplomatic voices has criticized U.S. President Donald Trump's recent decision to end the Temporary Protected Status(TPS) of thousands of Haitians taking refuge in the U.S., saying the country isn't yet ready for the influx after a slew of natural disasters devastated the island nation.

"That's a sad decision, because the Haitian population in the U.S. that arrived after the earthquake and after the storm that destroyed half of the island, cannot go back to a situation that still is very difficult," Archbishop Silvano Tomasi told Catholic News Agency on Nov. 24.

Ashley Feasley says Haitian T.P.S. recipients have 27,000 U.S. citizen children.

A large number of T.P.S. recipients are employed, have mortgages and participate in the community.

"They have worked to comply with the existing regulations, and they have been vetted by the Department of Homeland Security," Ms. Feasley says.

TPS for Haitians - Let the Haitians stay

Father Gerard Jean-Juste - TPS For Haitians

On Thanksgiving, of all days, the Department of Homeland Security is to announce whether it will extend the temporary protected status that was granted to about 50,000 Haitians. Unless their status is extended this week, they must leave by Jan. 22.

By any reasonable measure, Haiti is not ready to take them back. The country does not have the resources to absorb 50,000 people, and the money they have sent back is a critical source of income for their relatives and homeland.
