Chicken in Haiti

A Haitian chicken goes by many names: Some call it poulet creole, most Haitians call it "Poul Peyi" to differentiate it from the popular white leghorn imported chicken.

Others call it "Poul Di" because it meat is nice and firm compared to the leghorn chicken.

Whatever you choose to call it, know this...

Haitians prefer the Haitian creole chicken then the alternative imported white chicken; however, the latter is cheaper and Haitian is a poor country. That makes the poul peyi a delicacy these days.

In Haitian Creole, "Ti Poul dèyè Manman" can mean many things... Literally it means baby chicks following their mother, the hen or female chicken. but it has other meanings as well...

When a Haitian tells you: "Ou se yon Ti Poul dèyè Manman," what they are really trying to tell you is that you have no experience, you dont know what you are talking about.
