The hatian flag is a derivative of the french flag colors which is red, white and blue. After "La guerre de l'independance" when Haiti became a country, it was decided to rip the white out from the french flag and leave the blue and the red which I belive stands for blue for the negro or black race, and red for the mulatto or mixed race.
At various times during our history the blue have been replaced with the black but the red remains constant.

Also the flag have flip from vertical to horizontal at different times during our history.

The current version was adopted after the fall of baby doc in 1986 because the black was associated with the dictatorship, so it was replaced by the blue and flipped in the horizontal position.

The coat of arms were also added.
