I have been reading about using unused shipping containers as shelters for years now. Why is it not happening already in places like Haiti?

That is a scandal!

There are literally millions of shipping containers sitting at ports because America and other countries in North and South America do not export as much as they import and it costs too much to ship these containers out empty.

I am not advocating converting the containers - installing plumbing, etc.

Just hand them out to Haitians and let the local economy create a shipping container remodeling industry.

In the mean time a shipping container as is is waterproof, earthquake proof and virtually storm proof.

Also, Haiti is too poor to re build using concrete and shipping containers - which are stack-able - can rebuild a city on a semi-permanent basis.
