Haitians need to do the hard work of building institutions both in Haiti and in the Diaspora so we can stop repeating the same mistakes over and over. We keep saying we are proud of the "first Black independent Republic" but there is a high level of distrust and individualism in Haitian culture, especially among the educated and privileged, which keep us from cooperating over many years to build businesses, organizations and other institutions that last while nurturing true leadership, especially among the younger adults.

We Haitians have missed major historical opportunity after opportunity.

Our national pride needs to produce more lasting and positive results.

We need to disprove that we are a failed state.
