Dessalines was the Robert Mugabe of his era. Because he did not trust the white French people, he had the white Haitian minority killed by ordering the 1804 Haiti Massacre (Jean-Pierre Boyer tried a similar stunt in DR during the 22 years occupation and I'm glad he failed).

Afterward, Dessalines declared Haiti an all-black nation and forbade whites from owning property or land there.

The descendants of those White Frenchmen could have kept Haiti economically solvent.

Instead, Haiti went from being a very rich colony to a failed state (just like Zimbabwe under Robert Mugabe).
