AMBASSADOR DUMAS TO RECEIVE 2011 "AWARD FOR SERVICE" FROM HAITIAN STUDIES ASSOCIATION

Former Trinidad and Tobago Ambassador Reginald Dumas who was recently awarded an Honorary Doctorate of Letters at The University of the West indies, St Augustine Campus 2011 Graduations, will be honoured again this year when he receives the 2011 "Award For Service" from the Haitian Studies Association (HAS) at the 23rd Annual Haitian Studies Association Conference, which takes place at the University of The West Indies, Mona Campus in Kingston, Jamaica.

The Conference themed "Haiti at the Intersection of the Caribbean: Tracing the Past, Mapping the Future" runs from November 10 to 12.
Ambassador Dumas has also been selected to deliver the Keynote Address "Haiti at the Intersection of the World: Tapping the Past, Facing the Future" at the opening of the Conference.

In advising Ambassador Dumas of his award and his selection to deliver the Keynote Address Dr. Marc Prou, Executive Director of HAS wrote "Your diplomatic roles as UN Special Envoy to Haiti during a key moment in the country's recent history and the resulting book, An Encounter with Haiti, have brought much-needed attention and fresh Caribbean perspective on Haiti's complexities.

Equally outstanding is your contribution to Haitian Relief efforts with the MediatNet Haiti Relief Fund, a shining example of true Caribbean solidarity."

Based at the University of Massachusetts, Boston, USA, the Haitian Studies Association is "the only scholarly association of its kind devoted to the study and awareness of Haiti in various fields" and "provides a forum for the exchange and dissemination of ideas and knowledge in order to inform pedagogy, practice, and policy about Haiti in a global context".

Current President of HAS is Dr. Matthew J. Smith, Department of History and Archaeology, University of the West Indies, Mona Campus in Kingston.
