There was a guerilla war between Spain in the Dominican Republic between nationalist and Spain. It was called the Dominican Restauration War. Haiti was neutral at first.
In January 1862, Spain issued a royal order declaring its intent to regain the territories that Toussaint Louverture had taken for Haiti in 1794.
After Spanish troops evicted Haitians living in areas along the Haitian-Dominican border, Haitian president Fabre Geffrard gave up his position of neutrality and began to aid the Dominican rebels.
The Dominicans won the war in 1865. A monument near the border in the Dominican town of Capotillo celebrates the start of that war.
