Maarten Boute: Digicel Group is a prisoner of its own investments in Haiti
Digicel Haiti CEO Maarten Boute speaking on Television
"We are loosing more and more many but we have to keep investing because we invested for the long term," Boute said, "and it is not the kind of investment that one can put in a suitcase and take elsewhere."
In matters of the continious devaluation of the Haitian currency, Maarten Boute said "Digicel is not a supermarket where we can constantly adjust prices based on the value of the gourde. We are making more money in gourdes but we have to convert it to pay our debts which are in US dollar and, we are a multinational company, we have to report our earnings in US dolars."
The coutinious depreciation of the Haitian currency is a big problem for Digicel, Boute said.
In regards to the polical situation in Haiti, the CEO believes that all the political actors on the government's side and the opposition must have a real dialogue in the interest of the country otherwise "the boat will sink with all of us in it.
