Why do Haitians consider old people "LOUGAROU"?

When I was growing up in Haiti, virtually every old lady in the neighborhood was considered a DYAB, a LOUGAROU. I am older now and things haven't changed that much.

Haitian Voodoo - Vodou in Haiti, a vodouisant making her request to the Lwa

Recently, I visited an old lady in the family. She made it clear to me that she will not touch anyone's baby, family or friends, because at her age, people are quick to call her a LOUGAROU.

Say what you want about her but she always give me some sweets when I go visit. Douce Kokoye, Banana, you name it.

One lady I used to know growing up in Haiti, she used to be so nice to me. When I came back to the neighborhood in my 40's, I heard she was the biggest LOUGAROU in the neighborhood.

What is it with Haitians and Lougarous? People in Haiti have a bad dream and they accuse each other of being a DYAB, a LOUGAROU.

And don't you dare telling a Haitian on the countryside of Haiti that you don't believe in this stuff. they will accuse you of being naive.
