Haiti - 200 Years and No Roads

Haiti is about to turn 200 years old on January 1, 2004.

In 2 days, on May 18, 2003, Haiti will celebrate 200 years since our ancestors ripped the "White" from the French Flag and pieced together the "Blue" to the "Red"

Its purpose was to create a bond, to stand for freedom, and unite every single person living under it.

200 Years!... Do you believe this?

200 Years since we've been FREE... Free from what?

Haiti is only one hour away... from the most powerful country in the world! i.e. The United States

Do you believe this!

I've been told that it takes about 7 to 9 hours to get from Port-au-Prince to Fort Liberté

You know what's worse? According to the CIA World Fact Book 2002, Haiti is slightly smaller than the state of Maryland.

Yet, it takes 7 to 9 hours to drive from the capital to one edge of the island.

So... Let's see...

We just wasted 200 years fighting one another,

  • 200 years blaming one another,
  • 200 years pointing the finger,
  • 200 years saying "Haiti will never change"
  • 200 years saying "Avi! Aba! Rache Manyòk ou!
  • 200 years down the drain!

A few years back while working in a warehouse in Orangeburg, NY, a man made a joke, I though it was funny.

He said: "Depi 1804 ayisyen ap fè ganmèl. jiska prezan, si li pa kore-l avèk yon ròch, li pap chita dwat!"

That's not funny!

I'm with you, my friend, I want to celebrate the 200th aniversary of our beloved Haitian flag exept, I really want it to mean something to each and everyone of you.

The Americans say "United We Stand"

We Haitians, we say "L'union Fait La Force"

Stop saying it and Just Do It!

Haiti is not a housing project, it is a country
Haiti is not a garbage dump, it is 'La Perle Des Antilles'

Let us Clean it!
Let us Fix it!
Let us take good care of it!
and For God sake, Let us live in peace and harmony

Not all Haitians are Black.

I'm a white Haitian and no I am not confused...I am not simply light skinned.

I'm white.

But anyway...your comment does make sense and I agree with SOME. yes Haitians need to get together and follow our own motto: L'union fait la force.

Yes, I am Haitian and I am proud of herritage and cluture but every times I sat down and started thinking about Haiti tears come to my eyes. I am full of sadness in my heart especially when I start thinking how rich and profound our cluture is. Like you said in the article it is time for us to start taking respossibility for our doings' and stop pointing fingers at each other.

Although Haiti is only one hour away from the U.S we should be counting on the U.S gorvernment help us out. If that was the case it would of happen a long time ago. Personally, my theory is that the U.S gorvernment would rather see Haiti stays the way it is. After all I believe we are being punish for being the "FIRST BLACK INDEPENDENT NATION IN THE WORLD".

I certainly understand how you feel comrade, i used to feel the same way too but that's until I looked at myself in a mirror and see an able man with all his strength and God given abilities.

Our problem start with the thinking that someone else should take care of our problems.

allow me to ask you what satisfaction or pride would you and I or any other Haitian display by being the first black nation to earn its independence only to colapse 200 hundred years later in the hands of an occupier?

Maybe we should not have been a free nation.

Remember Toussaint L'Ouverture did not want this.

We still paying interest to the French for this so called "Freedom".
