Naomi Osaka was born in Japan to a Haitian father. She started playing tennis at the age of three while living in Japan. Her parents then moved with her to New York so she could improve her skills as a tennis player. All this time, she had never been to Haiti.

"I visited my father's hometown, Jacmel," she said, "and other places in the country. I could see that Haiti is a beautiful little country. The negative comments do not reflect the reality."
