Haiti Poultry - 8 Chickens Dead in 5 days - Maladi Poul deyo!

It's sick chicken season in Haiti... Last week, I lost 8 of my 12 chickens in the back yard and it made me feel sorry for all the Haitian men and women from the countryside who earn a living raising chicken... I just found out lots of chickens across Haiti get sick and die each and every year... "Maladi Poul" Haitians call it...

When my cousin told me: "Yonn nan poul yo nan kalòj la malad wi!" (There is a sick chicken in the coop) My first reaction, growing up in the United States, was "Where is the nearest veterinarian?"

The guy laughed like I made a joke!

I really wanted to go see an expert in the field to ask him or her what is wrong with my chicken and what do I have to do to fix it and protect the other eleven...

You mean to tell me Haiti's chickens get sick and die each and every year and there is no where to go, no one to ask, nowhere to find out what the cause is and how to treat it? or how to prevent it?

"Ba yo tetrasiklin!" (Give them Tetracycline)

"Pire Citron nan gòj yo!" (Pour lemon in their mouths)

"Mete poud kafe nan dlo ba yo bwè!" (add ground coffee in their drinking water)

Mete lalwa nan dlo ba yo bwè (Add aloe to their drinking water)

Each and every Haitian is a chicken doctor and none of them can stop my chickens from dying. They give you all kinds of advice except tell you where to go to get a definite answer...

Between Sunday and Thursday, 8 Chickens lay dead in the back yard... Wow...

Who is responsible for Haiti's livestock???

For someone like me who bought these chicken for food it is no big deal really BUT for the Haitian lady who comes by on Wednesdays and Saturdays to sell us her chicken eggs, it is more than a BIG DEAL, 8 manman poul mouri (8 dead chickens) represent a HUGE loss in revenue.

What do you think about that?

I've seen this happen year after year. There is total ignorance on raising chickens (in a healthy way) and resignation that chickens get sick and die and there's nothing to be done.
It would be great if someone out there knows what to do and would e-mail
