Shipping Container Houses In Haiti?

Could Haiti convert shipping containers into new homes as an immediate alternative to house the earthquake homeless? Well... You will be surprise when you find out how the rest of the world is converting old shipping containers into "Green Homes"

First let me show you this amazing video from HDTV (Home and Garden Television) and show you how two shipping containers are turned into a livable safe home... It's amazing...

Should Haiti consider using shipping containers to build houses for the homeless?

Some people seem to think so.

As a matter of fact here is a statement by Richard Martin, a retired professor of construction and industrial design:

"Right now, the way I see it, there is no way you can use conventional construction to rebuild Haiti. The concrete block they use is very weak, it just crumbled, and they can't afford the cement to make proper concrete.

Everything has to be imported, so why not import some containers, just position them and put in windows and doors and interiors?"

If you don't think this is a good idea, watch this video:

Shipping container homes are cheap to produce, but if you think it is a just a cheap alternative, think again...

In other parts of the world they call these shipping container homes "Green Homes" especially in Thailand where many people are concerned about eco design, Wood for home building is expensive and shipping containers are in abundance.

I've been thinking about building a self contained little fortress out in the countryside of Haiti... A la Campagne... as they say

It looks like I might just get me an ecopod!

Looking at how shipping containers are already being used in Haiti as "Boutik" and "Magazin" all along the side of the roads who knew that one day it was also be a cheap alternative to a "kay beton"

Honesely...

After what happened in Haiti on January 12....

I think I'll settle for the shipping container home instead...

Love your passion.

I am a fan of Shipping Container Houses as well but as someone that works hands on with charity building in SE Asia I can tell you first hand that they are a great solution for a very small sub niche, when they are a great fit they are excellent but when don't fit right they are more than challenging.

There is a good resource at containerhome.info/shipping.html if you are interested in finding out

I have been reading about using unused shipping containers as shelters for years now. Why is it not happening already in places like Haiti?

That is a scandal!

There are literally millions of shipping containers sitting at ports because America and other countries in North and South America do not export as much as they import and it costs too much to ship these containers out empty.

What a superb innovation!!! It is fast, economical and efficient.

I suggest that this idea should be packaged and thrown to the NGO's as they are the organizations with financial and managerial backup of the Clinton-Bush Team.

It sounds like a splendid solution to Haiti's homelessness problem.

The Container City system uses shipping containers linked together to provide high strength, prefabricated steel modules that can be combined to create a wide variety of building shapes and adapted to suit most planning or end user needs.

This modular technology enables construction times and cost to be reduced by up to half that of traditional building techniques while remaining significantly more environmentally friendly.
